The Death of Pandu (Long post but does describe the death of Pandu and immediate event in detail. Hope you like it.) The Pandava children endeared themselves not only to their parents, but to all the sages and bards in the forest. The young boys began to show exceptional skills as foretold. Yet at the same time they were ever respectful of the elders and always in reverence to the sages. Pandu himself felt elated. And so, the time passed. Yudhishthir, the eldest, was nearly 16 years old now. The seasons changed and spring arrived. One day, Pandu was walking by the river. The whole earth was decked with flowers, scent of which spread far by a very pleasant gentle cool breeze that is ever so sylvan. Madri was with Pandu. Madri saw lotuses in full bloom on the riverside. She got into the river, and started plucking the flowers. The effect of the season, her clothes wet and clinging to her sensual body, long term celibacy and everything else, invoked the man in Pandu. At this time, he found Madri to be irresistible. Seeking a compulsive union with his wife, Pandu approached her. Madri tried to resist and implore him but she too was a deprived of the man-woman relationship for all these years. When the eventual event happened, the curse of Sage Kindam invoked itself and Pandu was struck dead immediately. Madri immediately let out a cry of anguish. This brought Kunti and the children forth. Kunti beheld the scene and understood what happened. For the first time, Kuntis anger got better of her. She scolded Madri quite a lot and said, This hero of ours had been guarded all along by me against such an eventuality. I often took care of his other needs with my benevolent nature. You, O Madri, knew of the sages curse. You knew what would happen. How could you not control your momentary pleasures? Why could not restrain yourself and this great amongst men? Madri replied, O Sister, I did try to resist. But my protests were not strong enough and proved no avail. Kunti realized that she had come too strong on Madri and her good nature returned. She said, You are fortunate, O Madri, that you saw and witnessed the bloom of delight on the face of our husband. You are indeed blameless and it is fate and destiny that has taken its course. After all the curse had to come true one day. Therefore, I forgive you. But now, as the elder, it is my duty to follow him to heavens as a Sati. So arise, let go off your grief and raise our children for their proper place in the world. Madri, who was full of guilt, replied, O revered sister, I know my own nature. If I survive you, it is certain that I shall not be able to raise your children as my own. I have seen you. You have never made such a distinction any time and in fact love my children more than your own. So it is indeed you who is right for such a duty. Besides, as it was the pursuit of my body that caused the death of our dear husband, I should be the one to follow him. I shall enter the funeral pyre and burnt with him. After much arguments, Madri ascended to the pyre with her husband.
