The Deepening Iran-Oman-India Energy Triangle By Dr. Suleiman - TopicsExpress

The Deepening Iran-Oman-India Energy Triangle By Dr. Suleiman Wasty Among the latest initiatives of energy-sector collaboration in the Gulf and South Asia is the intermittent dialogue for linking Iran, Oman, and India (IOI) through an off-shore gas pipeline. Doubtless, this prospective development carries enormous benefits for the participant countries. These deliberations (including feasibility studies) – continuing over the past two years – are marked by a tentative character mixed with skepticism over whether the project could ever come to fruition. Part of the problem stems from the inherent legal constraints (e.g., lifting of trade sanctions against Iran), while each party weighs the pros and cons of seeking other bilateral/trilateral alternatives. Concurrently, the sub-region has been witnessing a plethora of potential combinations/permutations of energy-sector relationships (almost resembling a chess game) – each with its own repercussions for the shifting power allegiances involving, directly and/or indirectly, many countries, especially Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Myanmar, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan. This short piece argues in favor of the IOI and briefly delineates the geopolitical considerations. gulfstateanalytics/archives/work/the-deepening-iran-oman-india-energy-triangle
