The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency has invented and developed a wide range of technologies used in both military and non-military applications, including things such as the Arpanet (very direct predecessor to the Internet), GPS, carbon fiber composites, and remote surgery. The fact that it doesnt have to justify R&D in terms of short-term return to investors allows it to focus on risky, long-term projects that many for-profit companies would forego.
