The Department of Education and the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Urdu, Arbi – Farsi University, Lucknow, a State University established under the U.P. State Universities Act is organizing a Two – Day National Seminar on ‘ROLE OF MEDIA IN PROMOTING RIGHT TO EDUCATION’ 11th – 12th March, 2014 About the Seminar The Right to Education Legislation is an important milestone in the country’s continuing process of providing elementary education to the deprived children of the society. It is even more meaningful now as it has brought education in the ambit of a child’s fundamental right. Several studies in the past have shown that a large proportion of families belonging to the backward and marginalized sections of the society are unaware of the provisions made for them by the government. This is where media needs to step in. Since media is considered the fourth pillar of Indian democracy, it becomes obligatory for the media to create awareness among the under- privileged masses about their rights. It is important for both print and electronic media to wield its potential strength in dispelling the negativities associated with RTE and play a proactive role in taking the idea of RTE to the masses. The ever increasing presence of media in the Indian subcontinent makes it a potential instrument of mobilizing public opinion which if positively harnessed can play a crucial role in motivating parents to send their children to school and also reducing the number of drop outs. Another important role to be played by media as a watchdog of democracy is to ensure that there is transparency and accountability in the delivery system of RTE. In fact, its time for media to take up RTE as a cause. Objectives of the seminar To review Right to Education Act in its current pretext. To study the dynamics of implementing Right to Education To discuss problems and issues pertaining to RTE To evaluate the contribution of media in the field of Education To study the dynamics of reporting issues pertaining to RTE To strengthen media’s role in monitoring and evaluation of RTE Themes and Sub- themes Right to Education Right to Education in the context of Liberalization, Privatization, and Globalization Right to Education and Quality Right to Education and financial implications Access and Reach of RTE legislation Developmental Communication Role of Media in Promoting Education and Awareness Media as a monitoring and evaluating tool New Media and RTE Role of Media in Promoting RTE CALL FOR PAPERS Papers will be selected on a competitive basis and all submissions will be screened by an expert panel.
