The Department of Homeland Security describes human trafficking as “a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain.” The U.S. government reports that 600,000-800,000 people are trafficked across international borders per year, rising to 2-4 million if domestic trafficking were included in the figures.
