The Destiel fandom implosion that I predicted this summer (having never seen one episode of Supernatural) has occurred over the past two days. The Twitter/Tumblr drama is beyond my ability to explain. The shows guest directors/actors and even executives at Warner Bros. are being harassed by irrational fans on Twitter. Now I have nothing to hope for, and no one is validating me ... is the general Destiel fan response. We just want to be respected as fans, threatens one person. They feel disrespected - by the show, and by everyone else in their lives. By the culture at large. This is how huge it is for these folks. One guest director on Twitter was truly baffled at what he had inadvertently unleashed. This all seems a bit intense ... he said on Twitter. The fans SHRIEKED like outraged banshees in response. Its called passion. Its called love. and etc. etc. It was as though he was every person who had bullied them in high school (even though he wasnt being a bully - he was polite, and yet very confused). I think this show actually is too intense for some of these people. They need to stop hoping that Supernatural is going to validate their hopes/dreams. They have lost the plot. I saw it coming. There is a very interesting story here ... having to do with subtext and inference - and the inability of people to understand these fictional devices, as well as to understand that episodic TV dramas require DRAMA, not everyone sitting around being validated from week to week. Theres something very deep going on, emblematic of something else. I have been watching this fandom implode for two months now, leading up to the Season 9 premiere. Things are just going to get worse. If you read the comments sections of Supernatural re-caps, its like a war is going on: the entirety of the fan base vs. the scorned Destiel fans. Its like this whole Alternate Universe going on, side by side with our own. I have always been a passionate fan of the things I love, so I do relate somewhat to the Destiel drama - but DEMANDING the shows producers VALIDATE their desires because if they dont I am going to have no hope in my own life anymore ... thats a whole other level. Its scary to watch, actually.
