The Dhanpable face - Mayank Kanungo Sat next to a guy in flight whom I would like to describe as a very Dhanpable face. I would have used the word slappable for a wider appeal but somehow that doesnt quite do justice to species of this kind. A Dhanp, a terminology generally used in the northern and western regions of India , as also in some discipline oriented institutions, is really a slap complete with emotion- of utter disdain and an urgent sense to punish the offender. One look at a guy like this and you know its a dhanpable face. Usually ( and Im reiterating the word usually) these people are obnoxiously plump, esp on the face, not really fat, (which means god didnt make them that way, they worked towards it). This kind also have an added flap on their chin , thereby creating enormous surface area for the dhanp to land. And make an imprint. A year ago , I had vowed to quit being judgemental about people. The activities , views and even looks of the intellectually and morally destitute was not going to affect me any longer. Since then I had been leading a wonderful and peaceful life sans all the blood boiling emotions which accompanies a judgemental view. I had vowed. But one look at this guy and I knew it was him. And within the course of the flight he proved it umpteen times. First, he was rude to the flight attendant who asked him to switch off his cell phone prior to take off. He continued using it till the aircraft took off and grudgingly switched if off afterwards; then he grabbed the entire armrest, squeezing me towards the window (I literally had to connivingly plot my re entry onto the arm rest ). He barked at the passenger to his right for not placing his food plate properly. He polished off the flight meal in record time and then buzzed the flight attendent to clear the plate, even when she was still distributing the food. Ahh the look on her face- of polite rudeness (Im sure they have special courses for this at the Air hostess academies, how else can you perfect grinding your teeth behind a forceful smile ?) she simply said she will clear them after a while. Now, the sad part about a dhanpable face ( as with many appealing things in life) is that you can only explicitly fantasise about them but can never put them to action. Im sure it will lose its charm if it were to become a Dhanped face. That wouldnt be appealing at all! P.s Im thankful to this gentleman after all , as it is cos of him that Im finally able to put words to my suppressed feelings when I encounter the people of his kind. Sitting right next to him while writing this is certainly very inspiring .
