The Drug Enforcement Commission through its Anti-Money Laundering Investigations Unit has arrested a former Branch Manager of Giant Communications Ltd in Kafue for money laundering activities involving over K80, 000. Joseph Banda, 34, of House No. 150/15 Chawama Township in Lusaka has been arrested for theft, obtaining money by false pretences and money laundering contrary to the laws of Zambia. Particulars of the offence are that, Joseph Banda on dates unknown but between 1st January, 2013 and 31st July, 2013 jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown in his capacity as Branch Manager of Giant Communications Ltd in Kafue District, did steal monies amounting to K84,903 the property of Giant Communications Ltd. The said monies were obtained under pretences that he was paying for radio adverts, maintenance of the business premises and other office expenses when in fact not. Meanwhile the Commission has arrested more than ten (10) Peasant farmers countrywide for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants. Those arrested include Morgan Kabamba, 27, a peasant farmer of Pilati Kunda Mapepela area in Mkushi District for unlawful cultivation of 37.07Kg of fresh cannabis plants, Francis Hamamba, 37, of Matuka area in Mkushi for unlawful cultivation of 30Kg of fresh cannabis and Kebby Hamamba, 42, also of the same area for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 20Kg. Others arrested include Godfrey Sialanga 34, a peasant farmer of Tiamara village in Kalomo district for unlawful cultivation of fresh cannabis plants weighing 20.1Kg and Joshua Katete, 22, of Kaoma site and service in Kaoma for trafficking in 1.7Kg of loose cannabis. All suspects will appear in court soon.
