The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will most likely hire a private nanny. According to specialist agency Royal Nannies, a highly skilled nanny or governess can command as much as £1,500 a week, equal to nearly £80,000 a year. To take charge of a royal baby will no doubt cost significantly more. Meanwhile, the basic fees for Eton, where Prince William was educated, start at £30,000 a year, and if the average student spends an estimated £4,000 on an overseas gap year project, imagine the costs associated with one that requires royal protection. “On top of the essentials such as an outstanding household team and travel costs, we predict safety and security will be top of the shopping list,” said Nancy Baynes, a spokeswoman for the Money Advice Service. “This will be a costly essential as the baby grows up under the media’s glare.” According to a recent report, as much as £128 million a year is spent protecting the royal family, with security for Kate and William’s recent home on Anglesey costing £1 million alone. Even the royal baby’s entrance into the world is likely to come with a heft price tag. William and Kate have chosen to have their baby in the private Lindo Wing of St Marys Hospital. Here, a normal delivery package costs almost £5,000 and consultant’s fees can come to around £6,000. Then there’s the £1 million renovation of the baby’s future home at Kensington Palace, recently reported in the royal public finances annual report, and the additional nursery at Kate’s parents house in Berkshire.
