The Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is working again on J1. - TopicsExpress

The Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) system is working again on J1. We are now with a new EEW provider and it seems to be more flexible to work with. In order to test certain aspects of EEW that could otherwise cause a panic, we will be going to basic mode at times either before or after the countdown show that airs Sunday morning (Monday at Midnight in Japan) so we test the over the air system. For those unfamiliar with EEW, this is the system used by Japanese radio and television broadcasters to inform the public of an upcoming earthquake. Mobile phone providers also participate in EEW and there are special stand-alone receiving devices that detect the warnings. If you hear two short tones under the music when listening to J1, go to j1fm and look for a recent earthquake alert. Larger earthquakes will interrupt the broadcast with emergency messages.
