The Election Commission of India declared the results of 288 assembly seats in Maharashtra. The Maharshtra Assembly Election witnessed five-cornored contest between the five major parties; Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS). For the past 15-years, Congress and NCP alliance ruled the state. But the voters of Maharashtra this time gave chance to BJP to form government. According to the official data displayed on Election Commission of India’s website, breaking the trends, the BJP won 122 seats out of 288 assembly seats, falling short of 145 seats required for majority in the assembly. Despite the fact that BJP could not touch the majority number, it increased its number of seats from 46 to 122. Congress and NCP faced humiliation as it suffered in Lok Sabha Election 2014. Congress lost almost half number of seats it won in 2009 assembly elections. Congress won just 42 seats. NCP won 21 fewer seats as compared to 2009 assembly elections. Narendra Modi’s charasmatic persona in the state and it seems that it created impact too. Congress lacked the poll face in the state. Corruption allegations on NCP top brass leaders went against NCP and it trailed. Raj Thackeray’s MNS that won 13 seats in last assembly election, could retain just a seat. Contesting first time in Maharashtra, Asaduddin Owaisi’s party All India Majlis-e-Ittihadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) entered in the assembly winning two seats.
