The Election Commission will, for the first time, deploy Electronic Voting Machines with Voter Verifiable Paper Trail in the September 4 by-poll to the Noksen Assembly constituency in Nagaland. The Representation of the People Act, 1950, was amended on August 14 to include the use of VVPT, informed sources said. The VVPT will enable electors to see a printout of their ballot — displaying the name, election symbol and serial number of the chosen candidate. The voter cannot, however, take the printout home. Chief Election Commissioner V.S. Sampath is personally supervising the pilot project.
