The English language is so overrated. This is evidenced by the many Latin era languages which have devised a higher simplicity, a simpler manner of engaging in the spoken and written word. I am reminded of this, painfully, daily, as my kindergartener learns to read. I struggle with the myriad rules for several letter sounds. The difficult special cases. The contractions. In some cases, the stupidity in the non-phonetic spelling. I am so done with English. Which is why I hold small children faultless at times, when finding the right words is just really too much to ask. Sometimes I find myself in the same place. A perfect example would be my small daughter this afternoon, while we walked home from her bus stop. This is a nearly monumental task for myself and our two year old boy child to even make it out the door at all, let alone in time to reach the stop before the school bus. Today we were a few moments behind, and turned the corner after the big ol big school bus drove by, Ava already skipping down the sidewalk past A as we approached. We greeted, A waved, and curiously kept his distance, then Ava plopped herself onto the front of the stroller. She is much too heavy for that spot, and I have a rule about asking before doing. It became more clear within the ensuing moments that she was experiencing a struggle with her words. She proceeded to communicate to me with an interpretive tantrum that she had little or no nap at school today. Being early out, I find nobody at fault. Being she threw herself on the grass fronting a very busy street while flailing and screeching directly after scowlingly yelling with fierce determination that she hated being in my family...I braked the stroller and recovered her tiny body by the strap of backpack while ordering her to go ahead and use her own feet to walk. This is a lovely child. The one whom everyone who works at her school thinks is so little, sweet, and innocent. She saves this special behaviour for home, and has extended it for the day to the general public, should anyone have noticed while driving or walking past. You are welcome. Needless to say, she got a complete earful of scolding on the walk home, and marching orders straight for bed. I was even nice enough to turn on her fan and draw her blinds. But nap she did, and is slightly more human at the moment for it. Interesting how nap is just such a simple word.
