The English language needs a new verb, to ted. Or, to TED. To TED someone means to pretend to educate, enlighten, challenge, and surprise them; when in fact one is flattering them and confirming them in their prejudices. Take for example a lecture offering surprising insights into human happiness which, in reality, confirms the most conventional liberal bourgeois narratives. The listener gets the warm feeling of having known all along, and can return to their hypocrisy with the added boost of being confirmed in their wisdom by an eloquent authority. Such a lecture could be said to ted, the listener. Such a talk, indeed, might be called a ted-talk. Or a TED talk.
