The Epidemic of Over Exfoliation Fantastic information! Thank you Florence Barrett-Hill! I absolutely love reading your books and articles, an invaluable education for a professional beauty therapist. Thank you for your contributions to this industry. I completely agree with your point in this article. I see therapists overuse the tools of expoliation to the point of the skin being severely traumatised. Only yesterday have I consulted with a client who was prescribed a glycolic cleanser, ascorbic acid serum AM, Retinol serum PM. She has been using this for months, and the acne is not budging. She was prescribed a hyaluronic acid serum which she uses am and pm to counteract the dryness, with little success. The skin is traumatised to the point that the skin feels constantly painful, is highly reactive and is inflamed. This has affected the clients self esteem and increased her stress levels. I immediately saw that the skin acid mantle and skin barrier has been stripped and impaired and I performed a re-balancing, anti-inflammatory treatment, and immediately after the cleansing the skin looked visible calmer and the client commented how relaxed, soft and hydrated it felt. The skin looked fantastic after the treatment. There really has to be a balance to the treatments that cause excessive exfoliation, which therapists are either ignorant of or dont have the right tools to do it. Reinforcing and protecting, and where required, repairing the skin barrier, the acid mantle and the intercellular lamellar lipid bilayer is essential to successful results and long term skin health. Thank you again, it was a very enjoyable read!
