The Essence of Innocence Taunts, teases and traumas, insults and injuries, mistreatments and manipulations, criticism and controls, conditions and conditionings are all contraptions that encapsulate us from the very beginning, … but do not touch our innocence, no matter how they seem to surround, close off and conceal that precious essence. On the outermost layer there is often anger, for that is easier than the sadness of the hurt that is beneath it, which in turn, is easier than the deeper layer made up of fear that the sadness will always be so, that what we have lost or what we have missed or the bad that has happened to us will ever be the same. And, yet, there is even one more, last layer close to but not touching the essence of innocence, through which each of us must pass if we are to be what we really are - rather than the packaging and pretension, the persona and the mask we seem to be – one last layer that is the emptiness beneath the fear. These contrived and constructed contraptions linked to one another as armor encased the knights of old, pasted and linked together into a Rube Goldberg meshwork of buttons and triggers that set off chain reactions, chains pulled that set off a domino series of responses and repercussions, hooks and hairpins linked and jammed together, one inevitably moving the next, that hide that untouchable, unalterable, unbreakable, indestructible essence. The debris of inter-linked shields, warnings, gates and doors, wheels and gears may greatly conceal that unique and precious essence, but it is always revealed, sometimes suddenly in the exceptional moment and sometimes slowly and gradually over a lifetime. What is uncovered, revealed and released in such extraordinary moments?
