The Essenes were the origin of the Christian ideal community. Modern Christianity unfortunately resembles the Pharisees more often than not (sorry, it does). Essenes (Jesus was one) were a spiritual community based on conscious contact with God (LOVE) and a profound sense of wholeness without fear or hatred or judgement. What we see today of Christianity is mostly an exclusive country club of elite, gloating, supposedly heaven-bound people with a thousand rationalizations to excuse themselves from considering basic human compassion. Of course, this is not true for all people who call themselves Christian... the separation of the wheat from the chaff is up to the spirit, not you or me.
