The European Commission’s 2013 progress report on Ukraine, - TopicsExpress

The European Commission’s 2013 progress report on Ukraine, released today, highlights the dramatic chain of events sparked by the decision in November to suspend preparations for signing the Association Agreement, which led to massive protests in favour of closer ties with the EU, culminating in the dismissal of President Yanukovych and the appointment of a new government. “Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity were violated clearly by acts of aggression by the Russian armed forces” in March this year, the report adds, stressing that, “the European Union does neither recognise the illegal and illegitimate referendum in Crimea nor its outcome”. On 21 March, the EU and Ukraine signed the political provisions of the Association Agreement, and confirmed their commitment to proceed to the signature and conclusion of the remaining parts of the Agreement.
