The Evening Chronicles twitter account has replied to confirm that tomorrows (Fridays) edition will have a correction and apology printed on page 2. Yesterdays Chronicle libelled the organisers of the die-in and vigil for Gaza in Newcastle on 5 August. The paper repeated Lib Dem councillor Anita Lowers claim that this had taken place on 4 August, the centenary of Britains entry into World War One. Lower has disgracefully used this alleged timing to claim that the protest was an expression of disrespect to dead British soldiers - a kind of dog whistle rhetoric aimed to appeal to those who regard dead Palestinians as unworthy of commemoration. After this, both the Chronicle and Newcastle Lib Dems will hopefully think twice before making or repeating false allegations about the anti-war and Palestine solidarity movements.
