The Evils of Backbiting, Slandering and Gossiping in Islam. Backbiting can be defined as the utterance of words whereby one mentions his fellow in a bad way or mentions him in a manner that he would be displeased with. It is a major sin in Islam. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: Do you know what is Gheebah (Backbiting)? They (Sahaba) said: Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) know best. He (peace be upon him) said, Mentioning about your brother what he would hate (in his absence). It was said: What about if what I say about my brother is true? He (peace be upon him) said: If in him is what you say is true, you would have backbited him, and if it is not in him. then he is slandered (Buhtaan).[Bukhari & Muslim] Allah forbids these acts in His Book when He says, “O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; in deeds some suspicions are sins. And spy not neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allah, verily, Allah is the one who accepts repentance, Most Merciful” (Al-Hujuraat: 12). Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudree narrated that the Messenger of Allah said, “When man wakes up in the morning each day, all parts of the body warn the tongue saying, ‘Fear Allah as regards us for we are at your mercy; if you are upright, we will be upright and if you are crooked, we become crooked.’” (At-Tirmidhee). Backbiting, Slandering and Gossiping has become a very important topic in our meetings and our homes. It has caused damages to our relationships which has lead to hatred and tieship break up among families and friends. Some factors that cause backbiting are envy and jealous of someone success or achievement, fear of blame, hatred, wanting to make mend, trying to make cheap popularity e.t.c The prophet (SAW) said Gossipers will not enter paradise. Hasan al-Basrî said: “I swear by Allah, backbiting is swifter in consuming the religion of a Muslim than a gangrenous infection is in consuming the human body. A person who has a habit of Backbiting, Gossiping, Slandering others needs to make a firm and determined resolution to stop. It is more dearer for someone to keep silent than to say what will accumulate sins for him/her. We can protect ourselves from speaking ill of others by cultivating our fear of Allah and our sense of shame before of our Lord. This can be achieved by reflecting often upon the verses of the Qur’ân and the hadîth of our Prophet (peace be upon him) that speak about Allah’s punishment, that encourage us to repent, and that warn us against evil deeds. May Allaah count us among those that will be steadfast and submit to his will. May Allaah forgive us of our sins.
