The FANIA ALL-STARS were pioneers of Salsa music which captivated the spirits of listening and dancing crowds during its rise in the 1960s and 70s. Puerto Rican as well as other Latino musicians translated into music a sentiment increasingly developing among Puerto Rican immigrants of that era. Throughout human history music has been used as an expression of resistance by oppressed people. In the first half of the 20th century the U.S. worked tirelessly to destroy Puerto Rican culture as a way to destroy the self-identity in order to then justify colonialism in Puerto Rico. But that ploy did not work - the musical explosion of Salsa music during that period added a certain flavor to the momentum of struggle against oppression. And it was precisely that which accentuated the proud Puerto Rican identity.
