The FTC tries, but clearly its hands are tied. Last week it came down hard on 4 different ridiculous weight-loss supplement companies with fines in the millions of dollars - (including a variation on the ridiculous HCG diet DR. Oz!!!) - But here is the thing - The FTC cant force these companies to remove the products from the market - and so the companies consider such fines merely the cost of doing business. For instance Sensa - grossed over $350 million dollars between 2008-2012 - so this fine of $26 million - without a demand for removal of the product is merely the equivalent of a speeding ticket for them. The FTC of course cited false and ridiculous claims and shoddy worthless research so common of the supplement industry - one company even with B-list celebrity endorsers. Too bad the FTCs hands are so tied to do anything real about supplement hucksters - if they could - the whole industry would rightfully collapse!
