The Federal Minister for religious affairs, Pakistan, has announced plans to introduce Arabic as a compulsory language up till secondary school. Given the state of affairs, shouldn’t the priority be to improve teaching of our own mother tongue and Urdu, and English, because all major science and technology literature is available in English, and unless and until we develop in those fields to have satisfactory literature in local languages, we are dependent upon English? As for Arabic, the major interest lies in reading religious texts, for which we have ample Urdu translations and texts available. Comments?
