The Fergusson discussion should be about establishing a better - TopicsExpress

The Fergusson discussion should be about establishing a better connection between metropolitan and local police forces with the community they serve, regardless of who was in the right. Everybody wants to make a status about this, apparently, but nobody wants to talk about the derision and mistrust that brought us here in the first place. Over the past four decades, imprisonment in the United States has increased explosively, spurred by criminal laws that put more people in prison for longer sentences. At the same time, the nation has seen the rise of for-profit prison companies, which benefit from keeping more people locked up. Did you know the united states has the highest incarceration rates in the WORLD? Thats more incarcerated prisoners per capita than any other nation in the entirety of planet Earth, including countries currently undergoing civil unrest. This accusatory atmosphere boils the relationship between low-income communities and the police force that serves them. This positive feedback loop is only further exaggerated by the harsh economic climate that yields low-income communities more inclined towards crime. This is the conversation we should be having. Progress is not impossible.
