The Fifth Sunday after Pentecost – Ordinary Time, Year A (Proper 10: The Sunday Closest to July 13) “What was sown on good soil… indeed bears fruit.” Father, we thank thee who hast planted thy holy Name within our hearts. Knowledge and faith and life immortal Jesus thy Son to us imparts… As grain, once scattered on the hillsides, was in this broken bread made one, so from all lands thy Church be gathered into thy kingdom by thy Son. - Hymn 302, 302, cf. an early Christian eucharistic hymn, Greek, ca. 110 (The Hymnal 1982) Rooted and grounded in thy love, with saints on earth and saints above we join in full accord: to know the breadth, length, depth, and height, the crucified and risen might of Christ, the incarnate Word. - Hymn 422 (The Hymnal 1982) Jesus told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow… Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen! Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom… this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” - from the Gospel Reading for Proper 10, Year A (RCL, NRSV) according to Matthew (13:1-9, 18-23) This particular parable of the Sower describes the basis for our growth in faith and ministry. We must be rooted in the Word of God. Our weekly gathering in Eucharist and our daily prayer and scripture reading are essential parts of this rootedness. We gather to hear God’s Word. That Word is not simply the objective written scriptures, however. Above all, the Word is Christ and our celebration centers on meeting him and receiving him, the Word of God incarnate. We also meet Christ, the living Word of God, in ministry to the poor, the sick, and the neglected. - Proper 10 (excerpt) from The Rite Light: Reflections on the Sunday Readings and Seasons of the Church Year by Michael W. Merriman. O Lord, mercifully receive the prayers of your people who call upon you, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do, and also may have grace and power faithfully to accomplish them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. - Collect (prayer of the day) for Proper 10: The Sunday closest to July 13 (1979 BCP, p. 231) Revised Common Lectionary Eucharistic Readings for the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost (Proper 10: The Sunday closest to July 13, Year A): Semi-continuous O.T.
