The Flower and the Butterfly By Victor Hugo The poor flower said to the butterfly there in the sky: "Fly not away. See how our destinies differ. You fly And I stay. "Yet, we are in love, we can live without man, Far away and forever. And we resemble each other so much that they say We are flowers together. "But, alas! The air bears you away and I am bound to the earth. What a fate to decry, When I would like to perfume your flight with my breath Through the sky! "But, no! You go too far away. Amongst flowers without number Flying so fleet, And I stay alone watching my shadow Turn at my feet! "You fly away, then you return, then fly off again To glitter elsewhere; And you find me always each dawn Shedding a tear. "Oh! So that our love should faithfully flow through the days Oh, my king, Take root like me or give me a wing Like yours".
