The Flying Indians of Papantla (Los Indios Voladores de Papantla), - TopicsExpress

The Flying Indians of Papantla (Los Indios Voladores de Papantla), about to begin their dance in the park facing the Pyramid of Cholula, in the city of Cholula, Puebla, Mexico. In the background you also hear the music of the band from Oaxaca as they play modern show tunes before they begin the Guelaguetza performance, thus presenting a curious mix of the traditional and the modern, which in my view is the Mestizo condition for anyone who, like Mexicans, Chicanos like myself, immigrants and others, has a mixed heritage. We are traditional but we are also modern, our parents came from ranchitos in the provincia de Mexico but we grew up in the shadow of skyscrapers, we speak English and Spanish and Mixteco and Nahuatl, we watch the Walking Dead but we also love to see old Pedro Infante and Cantinflas movies and we are Indian, European, African and Asian. We arent one thing, we are mestizos and thus many things, to paraphrase the great French writer Victor Hugo, who said that he incorporates multitudes. Footage was taken on August 17, 2014.
