The Foreign Office A few days ago we published a tongue in cheek story about Irn-Bru being banned in Canada and related it to how the mighty UK Foreign Office was doing nothing about it. The reality of course is that countries Foreign Offices can not and should not try and influence another countries laws and Canada is totally within its rights to ban food products it deems to be bad for its peoples health. It has been revealed today that the Foreign Offices Devo Unit (this the part of the Foreign office that is meant to look after the interests of the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) has been trying to persuade countries to be hostile towards an Independent Scotland. On the face of things this might to be expected. After all it is an UK Government department and the position of the UK Government is that Scotland should not be an Independent Country. However the role of the Devo Unit is to try and promote Scottish interests abroad. I’m sure trying to get other countries to criticise the Government of Scotland is not really in Scotland’s best interest. It also sits uncomfortably with the message that David Cameron has been saying in public. That this is a debate for the people of Scotland alone. Is it beyond possibility that the Foreign Office could be trying to stop Countries striking deals with Scottish Companies in case it looked like Scotland could thrive alone? There are just too many unanswered questions.
