The Fouke Monster (What’s in a Name?) One of the most famous - TopicsExpress

The Fouke Monster (What’s in a Name?) One of the most famous or notorious Bigfoot Creatures in the South of the United States is the “Fouke Monster of Boggy Creek”. There are many variations of the name, and you could choose whichever one you want. Although, some of the earliest sightings in the area of Southwest Arkansas were in and around Jonesville, AR in the early 1900’s. Therefore, the original name truly was the Jonesville Monster. Jonesville is less than 5 miles Southwest of Fouke. Below is an overview from BING of the entire area. Also, I have put a couple pictures of THE Boggy Creek as it is today. One of the most famous incidents came on Saturday May 1, 1971. The Ford family of Fouke was literally attacked and subsequently chased right out of their house. This leads us to the title question (What’s in a name?). The movie “The Legend of Boggy Creek” by Charles Pierce would not have happened without the involvement of Smokey Crabtree, like it or not. Smokey will be discussed at length in follow up posts. THE NAME: There are two choices to where the Fouke Monster name came from. You can speculate as to which one you may think it is. And, they might even be connected, but only the Monster truly knows. 1-An excerpt taken from “Smokey and the Fouke Monster” by Smokey Crabtree states, “The morning after the Ford incident, I was in Fouke. There was a group of men discussing the Jonesville Monster and what he had done to the Ford family. I laughed and told the constable, Red Walraven, that he had run the Monster out of Jonesville and since he had come to Fouke and got himself into to trouble that he should be referred to as the Fouke Monster. I said that I didn’t think the Jonesville Monster would do a dirty trick like that. From then on he has been called the Fouke Monster.” 2-Jim Powell, of the “Texarkana Daily News” at the time, wrote the first few articles about the Monster and the Fords, etc. He referred to the creature as “The Fouke Monster”. Did he get it from Smokey? Let’s just say, this will go the way that inventions sometimes go. There may be similar items invented on the other side of the world, but they both equally may get credit. The bottom line is that “The Fouke Monster” was originally called “The Jonesville Monster”. Jeff Stewart Bigdog Alpha Bryan Impey
