The Fourth In Line Who Was First For Valour. Another first for Ulster. The first to win it but the fourth to receive it. Charles David Lucas was the Ulster-born recipient of the first Victoria Cross. He was born on 19th February 1834 at Poyntzpass in County Armagh. He enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Cadet in 1848 at the age of 13,serving on board HMS Vengeance. It was during the Crimean War that he was awarded the first Victoria Cross. The first investiture of the Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria took place in Hyde Park,London,on Friday 26th June 1857. Glancing at the records of the Victoria since its institution,we find that the name Lieutenant Lucas was placed fourth on the list. This is accounted for by the fact that though he was first to earn the distinction,he was actually t5he fourth to reveive it at the hands of Queen Victoria, his predecessors on that occasion being officers of senior rank.
