The Freedmen’s Town Coalition is inviting individuals and organizations to participate in an awareness Brick Streets preservation Town Hall meeting The Houston’s Brick Streets of Andrews and Wilson are located in Historic Freedmens Town in the 4th Ward section of city, now called Midtown. These streets were placed by freedmen following the end of enslavement of Africans in America. Thus, the National Preservation and Historical significance of the bricks and the gentrification of the area. The Coalition wishes to discuss the historic significance of such heritage in our great city. The City Council has voted to remove the bricks and a contract can be signed to replace them very soon. The Coalition wishes to stop the contract and encourage the residents of the city to encourage your elected officials to join this preservation effort to: 1. Stop the removal, 2. Use the best restoration practice so as to maintain the Historic Preservation Standards. Furthermore, the Coalition is concerned about the methods of removing the bricks in fear will destroy the historic preservation standard for restoration and that the city can use an alternate choice to address water lines and instead place the necessary infrastructure under the sidewalks instead under the street.
