The Funeral Rites should rightly be done as follows: The entire Hindu antim sanskaar can be completed in 4 days activity as follows (all day time activities only): Day 1 - Dheha sanskaar - ie cremating the body (1st day). Day 2 - Asthi Visarjan - ie immersion of ashes (3rd day of cremation - some do it the next day) Day 3 - Dashgaath - 10 days from cremation - mundan ceremony of relatives. Mourning is officially over on this day for the family. Day 4 - 12th day. Hawan, Brahmin Bhojan and Daan and completion. Usually the 1st day is counted from the day of passing away of the deceased but in Fiji we count from the day of cremation. The scriptures give no importance or reference to the 12 nights of evil practice of singing wildly and doping in grog thus causing havoc to the grieving family financially to supply grog. The 13 days mourning has only 4 important or relevant days (all are day time activities only) that needs to be observed. The 12 nights are all added up and these days it has become a big issue for a lot of families. VHP Fiji fully endorses the above.
