The GICHD, through the Arabic-language Outreach Programme for mine action, has partnered with the Government of Algeria to conduct the third annual conference on “Management of Residual Contamination” in Algeria, from 21 to 24 October 2014. The Arabic-speaking region is affected by landmines, cluster munitions and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) from current as well as past conflicts, including World War II. While more Arab States are progressing towards clearing all known minefields, experiences from countries in the region and in Europe, illustrate that it is realistic to expect a problem of residual mine and ERW contamination for many years to come.
