The GL 7th Grade Comets wrapped up their season this past Wednesday against Holt at home. Both teams played well, and won their final game! The B Team accomplished an undefeated season at 11-0! An amazing season! The A Team finished at 9-2 with their only two losses being in overtime. Another very successful season. Coach Ibrahim reflected on the season by saying It was an amazing two months for all of these players. The team accomplished a lot in a very short amount of time. We threw a lot of information at them but they were able to soak it all up, and implement it into their games. I also hoped that these players would become better people, and students. I think we all had a lot of fun, and that no one forgets that! The B Team missed their MVP Nick Cotter again due to illness but were able to find contributions from the rest of the team as they had done throughout much of the season. Early on Jonah Lyon, who started in place of Nick Cotter, scored a bucket. Delvin Storball and Wyatt Smedley also added scores two help fill the hole left by the missing center. The Comets led 11-5 after the first quarter. In the second quarter turnovers and tentative play slowed the Comets usually fast machine. The Comets could not hold on to the basketball long enough to get into any offense. The Comets looked as if they were a little out of it, and not mentally checked in. They shot 2/6 from free throw line in the quarter. Wyatt Smedley added another bucket but the Comets could only score 6 points in the quarter. The score at the half was 17-11. In the third quarter, the Comets continued to struggle. They were getting some better looks at the basket but could not convert at the free throw line going only 2/8 as a team. The Rams were able to get some timely buckets and were slowly chipping away at the Comets lead making the score 21-17 going into the fourth. Finally, late in the game the Comets came alive. Tyler McCready knocked down a three, and Jonah Lyon scored three points to get the Comets back on track! Devin Harris had 6 points, and Andrew Buffenbarger had 5. The Comets tough defense that was led by Devin Harris all season began to change the momentum and pace of this game by turning defense into offense. The offense then began to click and the Comets sealed the game and accomplished the teams goal of going 11-0. Devin Harris led all scores with 14, Andrew Buffenbarger had 10, and Jonah Lyon scored 5. The A team followed, and was hungry for one more win! Coach Ibrahim on the guys attitude coming into the game, before the game going through our pre game routine I could tell that our guys were excited to play, and focused on one more win. We talked about the varsitys push for #onemore, and we wanted to embrace that notion the final few days of practice and this last game. I knew they would leave it all on the floor for one more win. The Comets got off to a good start with a three from Kavion Autrey who played one of his best games. RJ Bohnet continued his strong play with an and one and Connor Winans did what he does best by rebounding the basketball and adding a score. The score was 12-8 after the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Comets defense slacked a little allowing the Rams to score 9 points. On offense however, Jared Houghton had a three of his own followed by a layup. Devin Gardella had a layup, and Kavion Autrey showed his outstanding athleticism by going coast to coast for a layup. Will Jerzak was also a force down low during the first half scoring 6 points. The score after the first half was 23-17 in favor of the Comets. In the third quarter, Will Jerzak began to dominate. Will scored 8 points on fast breaks, and in the half courts. Coach Ibrahim stated it is so nice to have a guy like will. You hit a slow patch or the offense stalls you can just call a play for will and it is almost a guaranteed layup and will get your squad back on track. Kavion Atrey continued his good play with an number of steals, rebounds, and another layup. Jared Houghton also added a layup in the third, and pushed the lead to 12. In the 4th quarter, the Comets stepped on the gas and did not look back. Jared Houghton stole the show, and showed why he was chosen as the MVP of the team. He electrified the crowd, and brought everyone to his feet with a spectacular crossover, and no look pass to Will Jerzak. He followed that with another three, and 4 layups. The Rams had no answer for him. At the end of his flurry, he assisted or scored on 13 straight Comet points. Will Jerzak had six .n the quarter. Both Jaden Michael and Corey Brock added jumpers. The Comets defense was lights out and pushed the lead to above 20. The final score was 55-31 in favor of the Comets. Will Jerzak led all scores with 20, Jared Houghton added 18, Kavion Autrey had 7. All of the players on both teams impacted each game! We will miss following this fun bunch of 7th graders! We wish you all continued success, and congratulations on a wonderful season! Go Comets!
