Ed was discharged from the hospital with his new pacemaker on Saturday and is recovering at his home. He is doing fine and looked great. He is ready to get back on the battlefields as soon as the doctor gives his approval. I am sure we will seen him and hear his booming voice in the very near future as he gives his famous tours. Judy always called him the energized bunny and now he only needed his battery charged a little to get gone again. He turned 91 on June 26. Or preservation down at fairfield. They pass on the knowledge and memories of previous generations that have lived on the field. Who can forget Deans ancestor who saw the slave catchers coming up Roch Creek at night going after a runaway. I think about that every time I pass by there come into Gettysburg. Ed Bearss and his interpretation of Oates assualt? They pass on things to us that were passed onto them. Things we would not have had. And we get to talk about them in the present tense. They are living history. Thank you both of you. I was fortunate a few years back to spend the day in their company and I realised just how lucky I was. I bumped into Mr Bearrs a couple of years later at Antietem and was blown away to realise he remembered me and said hello, not only a genius but a gentleman genius. As for Dean if you have never met him or Judy you simply must make the time. If youre lucky youll get a view of what Gettysburg was really like in 1863 and hear facts, stories and tales youll never read in all the volumes written about Gettysburg, It a wonderful experience listening to either of these masters of the art of bringing a story to life. It is called The plan remains unchanged, or Lees plan remained unchanged. I have it but not at my reach at this time. Troy talks about how Zieglers Grove was the prominent feature of trees in 1863 and was nearer to Cemetery Hill, and the center of the Union line. The Copse of trees was very small and not a landmark at that time. It became a landmark after the war by John Bacheldor, the official battle historian. THE DEFENCES OF BALTIMORE. Published: June 30, 1863 From the American of Yesterday. This was the predominant question among our citizens yesterday, and all shades of opinions were expressed on the subject. The object of Gen. LEEs campaign we apprehend to be the capture of Washington, and until he encounters the army of Gen. HOOKER, which is now understood to be pressing upon him, we may neither look for him at Baltimore or Washington. If he moves on Baltimore it must be in force, as we are now, thanks to the vigilance of Gen. SCHENCK, too well protected to be visited by a mere cavalry raid. We learn that Gen. TYLER, of Connecticut, has been assigned by Major-Gen. SCHENCK to the charge of the fortifications and defences of Baltimore, and yesterday visited and examined the different works. Gen. TYLER had command of Maryland Heights after the evacuation of Martinsburgh, and was highly complimented by Gen. FRENCH, on assuming command of that post, for the fine condition for defence in which he found it. New works, of a most formidable character, had been erected by Gen. TYLER during his brief command there, and every day was adding to its impregnability. We may, therefore, expect the most thorough completion of the works already in progress, and the addition of others of a more formidable character in and around Baltimore. ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Mon, 30 Jun 2014 23:23:24 -0400 From: Chuck May To: GDG Subject: Re: GDG- Ed Bearss Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Dean, Is there any truth to the rumor that this pacemaker is the one that should have been given to Bobby Lee before the battle, but Lee said to hold on to it in case Ed Bearss might need it someday? For decades, the small stone house on Seminary Ridge from which Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee commanded his army during the Battle of Gettysburg has been unprotected and surrounded by commercial development. But thanks to a national fundraising campaign announced today by the Civil War Trust and other national and Pennsylvania conservation leaders, permanent preservation of General Lee?s Headquarters may soon be realized...... ------------------------------ Message: 20 Date: Tue, 1 Jul 2014 10:28:33 -0400 From: Walter Wells To: GDG Subject: Re: GDG- Civil War Trust buying Lees Headquaters Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Amen, brother, amen!!!! ------------------------------ Message: 22 Date: Tue, 01 Jul 2014 10:58:10 -0500 From: John Lawrence To: Gdg Subject: Re: GDG- Civil War Trust buying Lees Headquaters Message-ID: Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Thanks Walter. Nice article. I always assumed that the widow owned the house, but I have seen it stated that thus was an early day duplex. Was a member of the Stevens family living in the other house. I wonder if anybody told Lee that Stevens was an owner there? I know he ate a couple meals there. Supposedly with Longstreet, Ewell and Early on the evening of 7/1/63. Is that myth or fact? There was a painting in the old museum there that depicted such. Ive also read that Lee slept for a few hours on the night of the first at the Lady Farm. Someone needs to write a book tracking the movements of these commanders . Lee, Longstreet, Ewell, Hill, Stuart, Meade, Doubleday, Hancock, Sykes, Slocum. What happened to Hill after Cashtown on day one? Ive read or heard he spent the next 2 days laying in bed with prostatitis the farm west Seminary Ridge near the monument to the 11th Miss. Whats the name? Its a beautiful place. Regards, Mike Barry
