The Goat And Axe Wayne Ferguson wrote a piece the other day about a goat. That story brought to mind an old family story I heard from my mother and her side of the family. I had to wait and talk to her before posting this. She swears by the validity of what I am about to tell you. My great, great, great uncle Ben Back of Menifee County had a nasty goat on his farm. Ben was one not to be outdone by a goat. The goat butted him every chance he could. Ben finally tired of this and plotted his revenge. Evidently Ben was meaner, nastier, and more cantankerous than any goat. Ben devised a plan to get even with his goat once and for all. He sharpened his double edged axe as sharp as possible. He took the the axe, sunk it into a tree at a level he thought appropriate to do the task at hand. He hung a coat and hat over the axe and waited. He hung it where he knew the goat couldnt miss it. His wait was not long, the goat saw the decoy and charged. His plan for revenge worked out better than Ben could have expected. His goat hit the axe, split its head open and fell over dead. Ben was not to be messed with, by man or beast.
