The Goddess Companion Heaven is mine, the earth is mine I am warrior am I Is there a God who can vie with me? The gods are sparrows - I am a falcon The Gods trundle along I am a splendid wild cow ~Sumerian Song To Inanna In ancient literature, we often hear the voice of the Goddess speaking. Sometimes she speaks tenderly, sometimes in passion, sometimes in grief. These tones seem familiar to us, for we have learned them, sounding through our own voices and those of women we know. But sometimes the Goddess speaks in pride and strength. How alien, then, does her voice sound! She brags, she boasts, she struts, she preens. She demands, and expects, out utter worship. Why does this voice seem so unfamiliar? Because we do not hear it often. Today, women are discouraged from boasting, from drawing attention to our gifts and our accomplishments. To a far lesser extent, men are also told to keep their achievements hidden, so as to not attract unkindness and envy. Yet to each of us is, like the Goddess, splendid and strong. Although sometimes our strength seems diminished, our achievements small and insignificant, we all have personal traits and tasks successfully completed of which we can justly be proud. There is no reason not to celebrate these, as we would celebrate the gifts of a dear friend. Hiding your beauty and your strength cannot help others, and will only hurt you. )0( By Patricia Monaghan
