The Golden Rule would summarize the asset of Interpersonal Competence- Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. In order to have interpersonal competence, a person needs to be able to have empathy, sensitivity, and good friendship skills. Of the young people surveyed, 43% believed they possessed this asset. On the other hand, 57% that dont believe they can empathize with others, be sensitive to others feelings, or have the skills to be a good friend is a staggering statistic. Young people need our help in developing this asset. Practice using interpersonal competency skills with your child. When you’re out in the community, be friendly to others. Strike up a conversation, meet new people, and be thoughtful of others. Your child is watching! When your child does something to make someone else feel bad, talk to him/her about what the other person is feeling. Help him/her empathize. You can help your child develop the asset by practicing seeing things from the other person’s perspective. Do this with your child. Help them see why others have different views and feelings than he/she does. Discuss with your child what qualities make someone a good friend. Help him/her see that in order to have good friends, he/she needs to be a good friend. Today’s society spends so much time belittling and making fun of others that young people, today, see those behaviors as being acceptable. They need our help and example to show them how they should be treating others. Imagine our community if everyone treated others like they wanted to be treated.
