The Good News – Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43 NIV Just a little different take on the “I will be with you” theme we have been using the last week or so. If you do not recognize the story, Jesus and the two thieves are hanging on crosses at Golgotha. One of the thieves rails at Jesus, “Why don’t you save yourself and us?” The other one recognizes that he and his compatriot are deserving of their execution, but that Jesus is not. He asks a simple question, “Remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He has no idea when this “when” will be. Maybe we can assume that the two thieves are also Jewish and perhaps they, too, have been waiting for the Messiah. It may even be possible that in their zeal to rid the nation of Israel of Roman oppression, they took the life (or lives) of some Roman soldiers. But one of these men recognizes their guilt. And simply asks Jesus to remember him in His kingdom. Jesus does him one better. “Today,” He says, “You will be with me in paradise.” Sounds a little like Jesus’ promise to His disciples in His prayer recorded in John 17. Jesus says, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.” John 17:24 NIV We are looking forward to seeing you with us as we worship this Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m. Won’t you join us this Sunday morning as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper.
