The Good Word “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5 (NRSV) Often in life we get bogged down in what I call “The Grass is Always Greener Syndrome.” This is where we are not content with our current circumstance and believe that if something was different, then all of life would be bigger, better & brighter. We keep hoping to find that big red X that marks the spot where our lives will be everything we ever hoped it could be. Instead, let’s recognize how we are surrounded right now by the Sacred. Moses was out in the same pasture he always grazed his sheep on that fateful day when he encountered God in the Burning Bush. The difference was he turned aside to “see this great sight” (Exodus 3:3). Barbara Brown Taylor in the introduction to her book, An Altar in the World, describes it this way: “No one longs for what he or she already has, and yet the accumulated insight of those wise about the spiritual life suggests that the reason so many of us cannot see the red X that marks the spot is because we are standing on it…The only thing missing is our consent to be where we are.” So, hunt the good stuff, recognize the Sacredness of your life right now.
