The Gospel lll Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Here is another verse about the gospel in a nutshell. What are wages? It is something you get as payment for what you did. What is grace? It is something you get when you did absolutely nothing to earn it. Mother Theresa surely did enough good deeds to inherit eternal life? Or someone like Emily Hobhouse who helped many women and children in the concentration camps in the early 1900’s? But our verse states that wages are only for those who are perishing while the gift of grace and life is only for those who want to be saved. If you want to pay to get in, there is bad news for you. Eternal life cannot be obtained. It is only available as a free gift. Jesus did not come to take good people to heaven, but to call sinners to repentance and faith. Here is the tricky part of the gospel: to accept that no one with even the very best efforts is going to achieve salvation. It is only for those who believe in Jesus Christ. Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God’s wrath remains on them. (John 3:36) One can only accept a free gift. Any attempt to earn it or to qualify for it or even to partially pay for means that it is no longer a gift. The good news aspect of redemption will then be gone. It will then become a religion or a human accomplishment. Whats more, this gift is only to be found in Jesus Christ. He will personally give it to you. If you are looking for it at a church, at a preacher or anywhere else, you are lost.
