My feeling is that the Vatican City did not allow her Gospel in and smeared her reputation by focusing on her past prostitution because they did not want to empower women. Women were second class citizens and for them to acknowledge how important Mary was to Jesus would have disrupted the order of oppression they were leading the world into.
