The Grand Budapest Hotel [2014] - I have said it before and I will say it again - Wes Anderson is one of the most original voices in cinema today. He is one of the few directors belonging to the 90s generation of filmmakers, who hasnt sold out yet and making exactly the kind of films he wants to. TGBH is the most Wes Anderson-y of all Wes Anderson films and perhaps his funniest and saddest film so far. TGBH is the work of a great filmmaker who is madly in love with the art of storytelling or perhaps a masterful storyteller who is in with cinema. In TGBH, Anderson narrates a story within a story within a story and employs the use of 3 different aspect ratios to represent the various timelines. Wes has cited director Ernst Lubitsch and writer Stefan Zweig as his primary influences on this film, which I failed to recognize as I have neither seen their films nor read the books. Instead, Id describe the film as a Hitchcockian murder mystery, sprinkled with Wes Andersons brand of offbeat humour and sadness, meticulously crafted with Kubrickian level of precision. TGBH is a film made by a cinephile for cinephiles. Wes Andersons latest masterpiece.
