The Grave Mistake: #17 Warning against shirk: Narrated Aishah and Abdullah bin Abbas: When the last moment of the life of Allaahs Apostle came he started putting his Khamisa (shirt) on his face and when he felt hot and short of breath he took it off his face and said, May Allaah curse the Jews and Christians for they built the places of worship at the graves of their Prophets. The Prophet was warning (Muslims) of what those had done. [Sahih Al-Bukhaaree Vol. 1, Hadeeth 427, Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth 1082, Sunan Abu Dawood Hadeeth 3221] Narrated Abu Sa`eed: The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said, You will follow the wrong ways, of your predecessors so completely and literally that if they should go into the hole of a mastigure (desert lizard), you too will go there. We said, O Allaahs Apostle! Do you mean the Jews and the Christians? He replied, Whom else? (Meaning, of course, the Jews and the Christians.) [Sahih Al-Bukhaaree Vol. 4, Hadeeth 662] Narrated Aishah (the wife of the Prophet): I bought a cushion having pictures on it. When Allaahs Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم saw it, he stopped at the gate and did not enter. I noticed the signs of hatred (for that) on his face! I said, O Allaahs Apostle! I turn to Allaah and His Apostle in repentance! What sin have I committed? He said, What about this cushion? I said, I bought it for you to sit on and recline on. Allaahs Apostle صلى الله عليه وسلم said, The makers of these pictures will be punished (severely) on the Day of Resurrection and it will be said to them, Make alive what you have created. He added, Angels do not enter a house in which there are pictures. [Sahih Al-Bukhaaree Vol. 7, Hadeeth 844, Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth 5254] Narrated Buraidah: Allaah’s Messenger said, “I forbade you to visit graves, but you may now visit them, for in visiting them there is a reminder (of death).” [Sahih Muslim, Hadeeth 2131, Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadeeth 3229]
