The Great Trailer Debate I am in the middle of - TopicsExpress

The Great Trailer Debate I am in the middle of another decision. This one is about space and weight. As in cargo. Here are the numbers I am working with: Jeep has a 975 lb cargo capacity. A cargo carrier (attached to a receiver hitch) would have a 200 lb capacity. I am pretty sure this would be included in the 975 lb. Jeep has a towing weight of 2000 lb, and a tongue weight of 225 lb. A small, wire mesh, utility trailer (3’X5’) would give me an additional cargo weight of about 1900 lb. Now, for the Pros: •I would be able to carry the second spare tire I want to take along. (Being out in the ‘back of beyond’ and having to purchase a tire is not something I want to contemplate.) •I could carry a lot more gear for comfort (Yay, me) •Would be easier on these old bones to load and unload than the top of Jeep. •Would leave me more room in Jeep in case I need to sleep there (you know, thunder, lightning, wild life, and other disquieting issues). •Better resell capacity than a cargo carrier and receiver hitch. And, the Cons: •Tags ….. about $30 for 2 years •Backing a trailer is not one of my strong points. ( I know how in theory, and have had many lessons from professionals in the past, so I can learn) •MPG will go down. (But, will it be a significant decrease?) •Will it be harder on the engine? (I am not going to be on the Interstates a lot, my route is mostly on secondary roads) •Initial cost, of trailer and trailer hitch. As you can see, right now, the pros and cons sorta balance each other. However, if you add a point system, the pros are ahead. This is something I will be discussing with the people I trust in these matters, before I make a final decision.
