The Greenbrier Humane Society has been dealing with an upper - TopicsExpress

The Greenbrier Humane Society has been dealing with an upper respiratory disease in our cat population for the last 30 days. We have been working with an infectious disease specialist from Virginia Tech and local veterinarians to eradicate this disease. Unfortunately all efforts to both identify and treat the disease have failed. Steps taken by the Greenbrier Humane Society have included vaccination upon intake and treatment of symptoms with antibiotics. When these measures failed we closed our facility for both cat intake and cat adoption in an effort to contain this disease process. We also instituted disease protocol to limit the exposure within out own facility. It is with great sadness that we have to report that our cats continued to worsen in their symptoms. We cannot humanely allow our cats to continue to suffer and so with the advice of local veterinarians we have made a decision of last resort which is to humanely euthanize our existing cat population. Our facility will be closed for cat intakes for an indefinite period of time to undergo protocol that will protect our future cat population. Our hearts go out to the homeless cats in our community and we ask that anyone who is able to take in a stray cat to do so. We will remain open for dog intakes and adoptions as well as the issuing of spay/neuter vouchers in our efforts to continue to reduce the number of homeless cats and dogs in our community Judith Walz-Harris President, Greenbrier Humane Society Board of Directors
