The Grudge Re-Re-Reboot Will Carry New Mythology Reboots are like a virus infecting all of Hollywood. No, that’s not the plot of the new The Grudge… It was announced a few weeks back that Ghost House Pictures and Good Universe will relaunch The Grudge franchise with Midnight Meat Train scribe Jeff Buhler to draft the reboot. This will be the second time they do so, if you count the Japanese remake (Ju-On: The Grudge is a remake of the made-for-TV horror movie, Ju-On). An interview with Buhler popped up where he talked about his starting point for the new Ju-On film, and how he plans to approach it. “We’re not approaching this as a remake of the Sarah Michelle Gellar film or a remake of the Ju-On film,” stated Buhler. “This is pushing the mythology forward while keeping the concepts and spirit of those movies, yet finding a new way to tell a story within that world, which is exciting.” The film will also be home to “new characters, new ghost, and a new mythology,” he adds. “I’m not really at a liberty to say anything more than that for obvious reasons, as we are still in the scripting process. I think letting fans of the original series know that we are not going back to (the character of) Kayako and trying to mine what’s already been mined is important (though). We are still very early in the process.” The 2004 pic starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, cost around $10 million, grossed $187 million worldwide and hatched a sequel. It was based on the Japanese horror thriller Ju-On by Takashi Shimizu. Gellar played a nurse in Tokyo who was afflicted by a curse that created uncontrollable rage and was pretty much fatal.
