The Gun Report: June 20, 2013 Jim Lo Scalzo/European Pressphoto Agency Look at our first item today. It is nearly unfathomable: two people having a domestic dispute fire a gun and kill their 6-month-old daughter. I know I sound like a broken record, but this is the kind of gun violence that we could—and should—be working hardest to prevent. It does not require new legislation—although legislation that called for gun owners to keep their guns locked in their homes would certainly be welcome. It does not require we spend large sums of money. What it requires is a cultural change, in which gun owners take their responsibility more seriously. Why is this so hard? Of course, if more people were charged with a crime after a horrible gun accident, that might help too. The couple involved in the domestic dispute were charged with reckless homicide. As they should be. Here is today’s report. —Joe Nocera A 6-month-old girl was shot and killed in Knoxville, Tenn., Wednesday afternoon while her parents were having a domestic dispute. Ken Mason, 40, and Angela Major, 26, have been charged with reckless homicide. Authorities are not releasing how many rounds were fired or where the child was shot.
