The HP Strategy: To Copy or Not to Copy? The Hewlett-Packard Company (HPQ), also known as HP, was founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, two electrical engineering grads from Stanford. Like many other computer companies, HP began in a garage—in Palo Alto, California, to be specific. While it has faced struggles in recent years, HP continues to be one of the leaders in the electronics industry and employs over 330,000 people. The company’s 2012 total net revenue was over $120 billion. Regardless of its stunning revenues, HP has experienced significant decreases in its valuation. In August 2013, HP’s market cap was nearly $43 billion with a stock price of $22 per share—half of its April 2010 value of $53 per share. Although revenues have decreased over the last two years by $6 billion, and the company reported operating losses of $12.6 billion in 2012, the company continues to dominate its respective market, selling more PC units worldwide than any of its competitors.
