The Harker Heights Hot Rods are state bound today after defeating the Harker Heights Bees in Under 8 baseball leage action last night. This is the teams first trip to the state tourney. In a nip and tuck game the Hot Rods overcame an initial three run deficit late last night in the Salado Field of Dreams Complex. The Bees started off strong with 3 runs in the first inning on some fine hitting combined with sloppy field play by the Hot Rods. However the Hot Rods bounced back in the bottom of the inning with lead off batter Jacob Ables getting the first hit and making his way around to third base and scored on a hit by pitcher David Hutson. The game went back and forth and was tied 7-7 at the end of the 5th inning. The Hot Rods scored two runs in the last frame and it was up to them to hold on to get to state and that they did. The first Bee batter got a hit and was camped at first as the Hot Rods got the next two outs to send it down to one out and its on to state. A bounding ball to shortstop Easton Colt who fielded it cleanly with a toss to a stretching Jacob Ables at second forced the runner and clinched the state title berth in Brownwood. Ables who went 3 for 4 and scored the first run as well being in on the last out of the game was awarded a game ball for his efforts along with Easton Colt. This was the fourth meeting of the year between the two teams and Bees had beaten the Hot Rods on all previous occasions but it was not to bee last night as the Hot Rods windshield was no match for the stinging bees. It is now on to state. Last year Jacob Ables also went to state with the Harker Heights Iron Birds when they drafted him to help them in state play. They traveled to Chandler and were defeated in the first round.
